About ISBNs

Where do I find the ISBN?

On the copyright page, above the barcode on the back cover, or in the book’s listing in your library catalogue. Both the 10-digit and 13-digit forms work, with or without hyphens.

Why does the edition matter?

Page numbers and sometimes chapter titles change between editions, so most styles require the edition in the reference. Each printing has its own ISBN, so use the one for the copy you actually read.

The book is not in Open Library. Now what?

Open Library is broad but not complete, and textbooks in their newest edition are often missing. Enter the details manually; the formatting is identical.
